1) On the first date, just be yourself.
Dating shouldn’t be one of those “10 things you should know before dating a girl” articles. See, you’re already a little off base. Let’s say you’re coming out of a busy day, have a cold, and are generally not in the mood for sex. You’re so not in the mood, in fact, that the best you can do is whip out your laptop and watch a YouTube video of a baby chipmunk falling into a blender.
We all know that dating can be a little intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be. After all, who could be more intimidating than yourself? Chances are, you’re more attractive than you think, you don’t have chronic diarrhea, and you’re genuinely nice. If you weren’t, you wouldn’t be reading this post.
People on dates will only judge you by what you put out there and they’ll be able to tell if you’re fake (by checking your text messages), if you’re boring (by checking the Internet), or if you’re a little nuts (by showing them your blog). Focus on the positives. You’re likely nice enough to have this first date, and you’re dressed really well. You’re good-looking (or at least you think you are). You have a good job. You’re smart. Everyone knows that.
So act like it. Don’t expect her to dress perfect or act perfect, and don’t expect her to be perfect. That’s part of the process of finding a person that you want to be with, and part of why dating can be so intimidating.
Honestly, the worst you can do is just be yourself. You don’t need to impress someone on the first date. Just be yourself. If she doesn’t like who you are on the first date, she’s probably not going to like who you are over time, either. Don’t try to be someone you’re not; if she likes who you are on the first date, she’ll probably like who you are over time, too.
2) The second date is more of a conversation.
You definitely want to bring something to the second date. Don’t show up empty-handed. Even if you know she’s not into bringing a present to first dates, try to suggest a dinner or a museum to which she can take you. It shows that you’re interested. At its core, dating is about flirting. But even if you’re a naturally smooth communicator, it’s hard to play up all of your attributes in the arms race that is the dating world. We asked dating expert, relationship coach and author Elena Fokanakis, to give us her dating tips from experience. Her advice will help you determine what’s working for you, and, you know, it doesn’t come with the lofty title of “The Dating Rules”.
1) Always leave the door open.
As a first date, it’s best to leave the door open. It is so easy to get tongue tied or to sit there trying to think of something witty that your date will find clever and hilarious, but end up bumbling something out of your head. Always leave the door open.

2) Lead the conversation.
Lead the conversation. Do not wait for someone to start talking to you. Every day with yourself should be a new chance to learn about yourself. We all have interesting things going on inside us. Show it to your date and let them discover you.
3) Always act like it is a date.
Every date is a date. It is your opportunity to meet a “real person” and if you want it to be more than that, you can. You will usually notice the things about your date that you like and that you don’t like. You will realize if they are attractive or not. You will also learn if you are compatible or not with this person. So don’t make a judgment about a date without even meeting the person.
4) Do your research.
First dates are usually set by the person who is being pursued, so take the time to research the person online before meeting them. Remember when you date, that you are dating a real person, not a character on a movie or on a television show. Don’t just “google” your date. Find out about their interests. What they do for a living and their hobbies, along with their friends and family.
5) Watch your body language.
Unless it’s totally professional, don’t sit. If you need to change a flat tire, or help someone move, always stand and watch your body language. Don’t be too engaged. Don’t try to listen to the date too much, just watch their
