As a former collegiate post-punk recording engineer and producer, I have a soft spot for the sounds of early-1980s British synthpop and experimental/industrial music. To put it bluntly, I love everything about it — the music, the aesthetics, the artwork, the clothing, the album covers, everything. You name it.
One of my favorites in that world was the Synthpop series (also known as the K-Tel series, the K label, the Punt album, etc) by the band Protoculture, an early innovator of the industrial/experimental/synthpop style.
For the most part, their stuff was rather light on the dancefloor (except for some of the single and B-side material) and, though they pioneered the synthpop style back then, they were overshadowed by a couple of the other bands in the genre that arrived later.
But, here’s the thing. If you are a student or faculty member at one of the universities in the school system that I worked at (South Carolina State University), you can (and will) come across a copy of one of the Protoculture albums during a campus search.
So, if you are reading this and you’re lucky enough to have a copy of the monolithic “Protoculture: The Synthesis” — which, to a certain young Mind Control fetishist, is the ultimate computer game — to look through, then I would love to hear what you think.
