“This should be one of the most popular drumming plugins in the world, and .s “Movement for Democratic Change” in action. But the Maltese people have rallied and the politicians have had to respond. And the response from the politicians has been to brush off these protests as “out of touch”.
Of course, you can’t blame Maltese politicians alone. They are but the hired hands of the banks and capitalists who exploit their people. And this is where the political saviours of the Maltese people come in. You guessed it, Valletta. They told Malta’s people who fought with socialist principles, “You have to learn to live with the austerity measures imposed on your country”.
The austerity measures have been a trap. Many people have been thrown in prison. The austerity measures have impoverished the people and created huge cuts in public services, which have been replaced with privatised ones.
When the Government announced the austerity measures they said they would not touch pensions and social benefits. But when they did announce austerity measures on pensions they said that new-born babies would lose, for the first time, all their entitlements and protection.
Valletta talked of a “revolutionary tax” that would ensure that Maltese people would pay their fair share of taxes. And then the first Minister who introduced the bill said: “you will get no credit for your protest”.
The next Minister, said that people could still protest as long as they did not do so in public.
But when it came to the new bill there was even less peace in Valletta. When the bill was introduced a minister said that the bill “will greatly benefit the Maltese citizenry as it places large sums of money in their pockets and those who pay a special ‘revolutionary tax’ will get to decide how the money is used”.
Now one might think that the Maltese people have a bit of a point and that their protests are not all that “out of touch”. The Maltese people know that the austerity measures are devastating to their country and that none of the politicians are telling the whole truth. They know that they are being bled dry, and that people’s lives are being made worse, and they are angry.
But where are the politicians? All they can talk about are their brave stand-off
