In MathStakCTCU, especially when talking about the Book of Proofs, there’s a syntactic shortcut that makes it easier to read the presentation of problems. For example, in Problem 3.16, instead of writing

I understand that the first equality implies that $g$ is an even function, and the second equality means that the latter is odd. But there’s no explanation in the book, and I don’t see what those quantities $g$ and $g’$ are.
